Groovs is a web application dedicated to second-hand buying, selling and bartering, specialised in stringed instruments.

This project was an opportunity to design an effective MVP while building and expanding a design system based on a mobile-first approach. It aims to offer a simple, consistent and optimised user experience for amateur and professional musicians alike.

What is Groovs?

Groovs is a web app for second-hand buying, selling and bartering, specialised in stringed instruments.

Offer customers a wide range of items at affordable prices.
Enable bartering between users.
Let enthusiasts explore new opportunities in their searches.

Market analysis: target audience

This analysis aims to identify the potential target audiences as well as the competition.

Beginners: They are generally looking for good value for money when buying their first or second guitar. They are expected to make up the majority of users when the web app first launches.
Experienced players: These customers already have a clear idea of their future purchases and are more inclined to use the various features Groovs could offer to sell or search more effectively.
Collectors: Like experienced players, these customers look for guitars with very specific characteristics such as the model, the year of manufacture, etc.

Market analysis: competitors

Through app stores and web research, I put together a list of potential competitors:

Zikinf: Zikinf is a platform for selling second-hand musical instruments, which makes it our main competitor. Fortunately, our advantage lies in the fact that Zikinf has usability shortcomings and no presence on the app market. In addition, Groovs stands out by specialising exclusively in stringed instruments, which allows it to develop a more effective search system for these products.
Facebook Marketplace & 2ememain: They are also major competitors, since together they cover the largest online second-hand market. Their drawback is that both offer a very wide variety of items, which means they are not specialised in any particular field.
Ricardo: Ricardo.ch is a Swiss online sales platform offering a wide range of new and second-hand products. It also offers an auction feature, which could be an interesting addition to Groovs in the future.

Let's talk about our first features

For its MVP, Groovs offers a list of features that are essential in the second-hand world.

A wide choice of filters: As mentioned, this feature would be the heart of our project, aiming to simplify the complexity of choosing an instrument in just a few clicks. Take the guitar as an example: besides offering electric or acoustic guitars, these also come in different styles, such as the ST style for electric guitars and the Jumbo style for acoustics, and many more. Our filters could also include accessories related to our instruments, such as amplifiers, strings, picks, straps, etc.
A messaging space: It is designed to resemble the interfaces of the most widely used social networks as closely as possible, in order to simplify the user experience and let customers keep their habits, thereby improving communication between users.
The ability to save favourites: This feature aims to improve the usability of the application. Thanks to it, the user experience is not disrupted by constant back-and-forth. Creating a saved-items space lets users refine their selection and sort items in order of interest.
Your own sales space: Naturally, each user has their own sales space containing the listing form used to enter their item. This form is designed to guide users in order to optimise the sale of their product, providing tips and fields to fill in so they can give as much information as possible. This is also where users can set their preferred payment and delivery methods.

And for the future

After the project's launch, it would be worthwhile to add new features that take into account the specific needs of the main target audience.

An auction system: If the collector community is present on our web application, it would be worth developing an auction system that adds a sense of excitement and rarity to the products on offer. Such a system could then help build the project's reputation among this type of customer.
Loyalty points: To keep customers engaged and invested in our project, it would be worthwhile to reward them with points that highlight their profiles and their products.
